KARACHI: The adviser to the prime minister on home affairs, Rehman Malik, called on the former Balochistan chief minister Sardar Akhtar Mengal at the Liaquat National Hospital on Thursday. After a series of meetings with the Baloch nationalist leader by different government and influential PPP personalities, this meeting is being considered an important step toward Mengal’s early release. However, a spokesman for Mengal has hinted that differences still prevail over the terms and conditions of his release. “They (the rulers and ruling party) want to initiate a dialogue on the issue but how is it possible in prison,” asked former Balochistan National Party MNA Akhtar Lango. He added that the government should first withdraw the case against Mengal. He has been in prison for more than a year for his alleged involvement in torturing personnel of an intelligence agency. In Sindh, it is the only case against the Mengal, he said. Talking to the Daily Times he said that the state itself was the complainant in the case, and the complaint could be withdrawn through an official order. razzak abro
