Police, FC ‘arrest 63 BNP workers’

12.04.2008

QUETTA: Police and Frontier Corps (FC) rounded up 63 Balochistan National Party (BNP) workers after tear gassing a protest rally in the Sariab Road area on Friday, party leaders said. Habib Jalib Baloch, the secretary general of the BNP, said seven workers were injured in the “unprovoked shelling” on a rally calling for the release of BNP President Sardar Akhtar Mengal. BNP’s call for a “wheel-jam” strike on Friday went largely ignored, except in the suburbs. It was business as usual in the city’s markets. Supporters of the BNP did however block the Sindh-Balochistan Highway and Quetta-Sibi Highway. “People showed up voluntarily and blocked the roads,” the BNP secretary general said. “We do not understand why the police fire at the protesters.”
