* Murder triggers violence in several Baloch-dominated areas
KARACHI: Two unidentified armed men riding a bike gunned down Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) Karachi President Zahid Baloch on Saturday evening. Tension prevailed in the Baloch dominated areas in the wake of the murder and routine life was suspended because of aerial firing and rioting by unidentified men. The incident took place at around 6:45pm in Petal Wali Gali in Purana Golimar when Baloch, 35, stopped his bike to talk on mobile phone, said Liaquatabad Town Superintendent Police Amir Farooqi. Two armed men on a bike opened fire on him, killing him instantly, he added. Gul Hassan, Baloch’s relative, told Daily Times that Baloch was visiting his relatives in the area when the incident took place. Hassan said that Baloch was a social worker and the chairman of an NGO, Baloch Tibet Foundation.
Hassan said the deceased was a resident of Nawa Lane in Lyari, adding he had married almost eight months ago and his wife was expecting a baby.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in Baloch-dominated areas including Pak Colony, Golimar, Nawa Lane, Kalakot, Patel Para, Jahanabad and Lasbella. Unidentified armed men fired aerial shots, pelted stones on passing vehicles and burnt tyres on the roads. However, no major incident was reported. No police case had been registered till the filing of this report. Sources said the deceased was also on the hit list of Lyari gangster Ghaffar Zikri because he was once a friend of Zikri’s rival Rehman Dakait. staff report
